“The IDA has carried out only one sponsored site visit in Wexford this year to date, the second lowest in the country, it can be revealed.” This information was revealed to Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary, in a reply to a Dáil question put to Minister for Jobs, Richard Bruton.
“Following on from the revelation that there were no IDA sponsored site visits to County Wexford last year, this is continued proof that the IDA has no interest in County Wexford and is incriminating evidence of this government's lack of commitment to the people of Wexford. These figures can be compared with County Louth, for example, which has had 18 site visits in the last 2 years.”
“While the government is ever busy making announcements there is little evidence of anything happening on the ground. The Wexford Local Economic and Community Plan (LECP) released this summer highlighted that County Wexford continues to suffer high levels of unemployment, high dependence on small business, low take-up of second and third level education and social deprivation. In short Wexford is an economic blackspot and the government continues to do little to help.”
Cllr Browne is calling on the Government to provide a specific economic support plan for County Wexford. Cllr Browne also believes that County Wexford is losing out by being part of the South East IDA region and would fair better if there was a re-alignment of the IDA to include Wexford as part of a greater Dublin IDA region.
